Usual Nickname, Unexpected Name--Nikki

How on earth did I do a Nicky-names post for boys, and not include some for girls? Shame, shame.
Nicole, of course, was a staple of 80s naming, and surprisingly, isn't too far out of the Top 100 today. Nicolette & Nicola are pretty recognizable variants, but what else can lead to Nicki?

(I also have to say, how amazed I am--whenever I do one of these posts, I discover some great names that really could work for previous UNUNs!)

  • Adonika (ah-DOH-nee-kah, Swedish)--feminine of Adonis
  • Ainikki (EYE-neek-kee, Finnish)
  • Andronika (ahn-DRON-ee-kah, Greek)
  • Annika (AHN-nee-kah, Scandinavian)--form of Anna/Hannah. Other forms include Anniken (AHN-nee-ken, Norwegian), and Annikki (AHN-neek-kee, Finnish).
  • Arnika (AHR-nee-kah, Scandinavian--from Germanic, "eagle" [coincides with German & Polish arnika, cognate of the plant arnica]
  • Aunikki (OW-neek-kee, Finnish)--form of Agnes
  • Dominika (doh-MEE-nee-kah, Czech, Russian, Slovak; doh-mee-NEE-kah, Polish)--feminine of Dominic. Another form is Domnika (DOM-nee-kah, Macedonian).
  • Enikő (EN-ee-koo, Hungarian)
  • Hennika (HEN-nee-kah, Scandinavian)--feminine of Henry
  • Jannike (YAH-nee-kah, Scandinavian)--form of Jane. Other forms include Janneke (Dutch) and Jannicke (Norwegian).
  • Mainikki (MYE-neek-kee, Finnish)--"wonderful"
  • Nicaia (NEE-kah-yah, [Ancient] Greek)
  • Nicolaia (NEE-koh-lah-yah, Danish)--Another form of Nicole. Also spelled Nikolaia.

  • Nikita (nee-KEE-tah, English, Scandinavian)--from Greek via Russian, "unconquerable"

American v. British, Part 2

Last time, I took a look at the differences between the British & American popularity lists, focusing on names that are much more common in the UK than the US. Well, this time--it's personal! Time to see what names are much more common here than across the pond.

And here's the first set--names so American they're not used in the UK at all!

Boys:
  1. Brantley
  2. Bennett
  3. Garrett
  4. Braylon
  5. Lane
  6. Gunner
  7. Waylon
  8. Brycen

  10. Landyn
  11. Gerardo
  12. Barrett
  13. Colten
  14. Remington
  15. Porter
  16. Kamden
  17. Gunnar
  18. Alijah
  19. Mauricio
  20. Major

Girls:
  1. Jordyn
  2. Kylee

  14. Alondra
  15. Madilyn
  16. Kyleigh
  17. Lyric
  18. Yaretzi

A bit too....modern...perhaps? Here are the top 20 'American' names that appear on both (full) popularity charts:

Boys:
  1. Jesus

  14. Presley
  15. Valeria
  16. Kaydence
  17. Nayeli
  18. Briella
  19. Fernanda
  20. Alejandra
Wow, the Spanish influence really is apparent, isn't it? As is our love of surnames.
Being American, I have no idea how crazy these names might appear to our overseas friends, but if it's anything like some of the 'most British' names do here, I should probably pare down the 'most American' names to the British Top 1000. ;)

Boys:
  1. Landon
  2. Gavin
  3. Colton
  4. Wyatt
  5. Brady
  6. Silas
  7. Ian
  8. Brayden
  9. Ryder

  14. Lillian
  15. Andrea
  16. Trinity
  17. Arianna
  18. Samantha
  19. Harper
  20. Alaina

Wait, does Ashley appear on the 'most American' girls' list, but the 'most British' boys' list? Interesting. There are a few other very 'British' boys' names that I see much more often on girls here--Finley & Mckenzie off the top of my head.
As well as surnames, we Americans seem to have embraced noun-names much more enthusiastically.
It'll be interesting to see if we start swapping trends, or at least a few trendy names, in the next decade or two.

American v. British: Part 1

The British ONS released their name data a few months back (woo-hoo! more numbers!). Top 100 is here, and you can download their full lists here (don't worry, nowhere near as long as the US lists!).
Despite the fact that Americans have a much larger "naming pool", there are many names that appear on the British list that don't on the American.
Part of that can be explained by the fact that the British list allows hyphenated names--"Lily-Grace" appears just like that, where on the American list it'd be either "Lilygrace" or "Lily" with "Grace" as a middle.
Surprisingly, Brits also have a much smaller babies/name ratio--with 60 babies/name for boys ('names' separated by spelling, so "Aidan" & "Aiden" are considered different names), and 46 babies/name for girls. Americans average 142 babies/name for boys, and 99 babies/name for girls. Again, this can partially be explained by the hyphenated names, and partially by the fact that the US just has a much, much larger population--about 730,000 babies were born last year in the UK, and 3,900,000 in the US.

I first set out to find the "most British" & "most American" names--that is, names that are infinitely more common in Britain than the US and vice-versa. And so here, are the top 20 names that appear on the British popularity lists, but not the American:

Boys:
  1. Olly
  2. Albie
  3. Fraser
  4. Osian
  5. Harri
  6. Gethin
  7. Tomos
  8. Barney
  9. Tyler-James
  10. Bertie
  11. Dougie
  12. Oliwier
  13. Frazer
  14. Georgie
  15. Tommy-Lee
  16. Iestyn
  17. Herbie
  18. Ieuan
  19. Teddie
  20. Rudi

Girls:
  1. Lily-Rose
  2. Amelia-Rose
  3. Lily-Mae
  4. Ffion
  5. Ellie-May
  6. Lily-May
  7. Ellie-Mae
  8. Lilly-May
  9. Bethan
  10. Jorgie
  11. Lilly-Mae
  12. Lilly-Rose
  13. Ella-Rose
  14. Tulisa
  15. Ellie-Mai
  16. Gracie-Mae
  17. Ava-Rose
  18. Evie-Mae
  19. Lillie-Mae
  20. Lacey-Mae

Good grief. Those hyphens really confuse things. Removing those....

Boys:
  1. Olly
  2. Albie
  3. Fraser
  4. Osian
  5. Harri
  6. Gethin
  7. Tomos
  8. Barney
  9. Bertie
  10. Dougie
  11. Oliwier
  12. Frazer
  13. Georgie
  14. Iestyn
  15. Herbie
  16. Ieuan
  17. Teddie
  18. Rudi
  19. Iwan
  20. Elis

Girls:
  1. Ffion
  2. Bethan
  3. Jeorgie
  4. Tulisa
  5. Poppie
  6. Fearne
  7. Lowri
  8. Xanthe
  9. Orlaith
  10. Dulcie
  11. Dolcie
  12. Kornelia
  13. Tamzin
  14. Eleri
  15. Cadi
  16. Hettie
  17. Ottilie
  18. Neive
  19. Catrin
  20. Romilly

I'm guessing that in the US, most of these won't ring 'British' so much as "rare", or to the non-nerdy, "weird". So, how about the most 'British' names that appear on both (full) popularity lists?

Boys:
  1. Alfie
  2. Barnaby
  3. Archie
  4. Harry
  5. Finlay
  6. Rafferty
  7. Vinnie
  8. Kenzie

  10. Mikolaj
  11. Jac
  12. Ashley
  13. Wiktor
  14. Ollie
  15. Matas
  16. Mckenzie
  17. Rupert
  18. Franciszek
  19. Owain
  20. Jenson

Girls:
  1. Darcey
  2. Isobelle
  3. Cerys
  4. Darcie
  5. Poppy
  6. Orla
  7. Florence
  8. Niamh
  9. Freya
  10. Kitty
  11. Oliwia
  12. Imogen
  13. Sian
  14. Zuzanna
  15. Nikola
  16. Maisie
  17. Seren
  18. Aqsa
  19. Wiktoria
  20. Georgie

I have to admit, I really like most of these names!
Apparently the influence of Eastern Europe is much stronger in the UK than the US! Not too surprising, though, given its closer proximity. I imagine we'll see something similar with the US & Spanish names next time...

Still too outlandish? Well, here are the most 'British' names from the American Top 1000:

Boys:
  1. Harry
  2. Theo
  3. Harvey
  4. Reuben
  5. Callum
  6. Finley
  7. Lewis
  8. Frankie
  9. Jamie
  10. Harley
  11. Toby
  12. Charlie
  13. Bobby
  14. Tommy
  15. Sonny
  16. Stanley
  17. George
  18. Ronnie
  19. Alfred
  20. Ben

Girls:
  1. Evie
  2. Millie
  3. Esme
  4. Matilda
  5. Holly
  6. Isla
  7. Amelie
  8. Martha
  9. Lacey
  10. Tia
  11. Jessica
  12. Phoebe
  13. Zara
  14. Lara
  15. Libby
  16. Mollie
  17. Lola
  18. Alisha
  19. Beatrice
  20. Daisy

Even though I knew going in that the big British trends right now are double-names and diminutives--for both genders--I'm still surprised at many of these names! For the most part, not what the typical American thinks of when we hear "British".

The most 'American' names coming next time. Cheers!

No Alternates Allowed!--Boys (2012)

Oh, my goodness! So many more boys' names from the Top 1000 than girls'! A lot of the boys' names past about 750 or so seem rather "out there" since historically, parents are more conservative with boys' names, thus girls have much wider 'naming pool'.
I was considering cutting this list short and only using names with only one spelling from about the Top 500 - 750, but I decided "screw it". Good for the goose, good for the gander; and all that.
Plus, along with the more odd names near the bottom of this list, there are still some really nice ones. ;)

No Alternates Allowed!--Girls (2012)

It seemz lyke everywhere u turn--kreatyv spellings! Obviously, they're not for everyone, but those who prefer the usual spellings have definitely felt their impact. Even parents using the most traditional or common names/spellings find themselves spelling their child's name out constantly.
But, for some reason, a few names from the Top 1000 (NameNerds' variant-adjusted Top 1000, that is) have defied the trend, and remain variant-free.
Here they are, in order of popularity.
(and stylistically, one of the most random lists ever)

Usual Nickname, Unexpected Name--Sunny

Okay, yet again, not really a usual nickname, but a nickname-y full name. Happy and off-beat, it's not surprising that Sunny (as well as Sunshine) has been used as a girls' name occasionally, especially during the 70s. As cheery as it is, though, it suffers from two major problems--it's a nature-name, which tend to be love-or-hate; and it sounds like a diminutive.

  • Allison (AL-ih-son, English)
  • Aysun (eye-SOON, Turkish)--"beautiful as the moon"
  • Josune (yoh-soo-neh, Basque)--feminine of Josu/Jesus
  • Sidony (sih-DOH-nee, English)--French form is Sidonie (see-doh-NEE).
  • Sonali (son-AH-lee, Hindi)--"golden"
  • Sonata (soh-NAH-tah, English)
  • Sonia (SOHN-yah, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish)--form of Sophia. Also spelled Sonja or Sonya.
  • Sonnet (SAHN-net, English)--from Italian, "little poem"
  • Sonora (soh-NOHR-ah, English)

Lyns Throughout the Generations

And by 'generations', I just mean the last 4 or so. :p
I often see "-lyn" names listed as a modern trend, but actually, they're fairly stable part of American names. Between 3-5% of girls get names that end in -lyn every year--of course, which "-lyn" names they get is determined by the fads of the day.
So, I thought it'd be fun to look at the top "-lyn" names for this generation and previous.

2012:
  1. Evelyn
  2. Brooklyn
  3. Madelyn
  4. Caroline*
  5. Jocelyn
  6. Madeline
  7. Kaitlyn
  8. Katelyn
  9. Brooklynn
  10. Adalyn
  11. Ashlyn
  12. Adelyn
  13. Adeline
  14. Adalynn
  15. Jacqueline

1982:
  1. Jacqueline
  2. Jaclyn
  3. Carolyn
  4. Caroline
  5. Jacquelyn
  6. Evelyn
  7. Caitlin
  8. Ellen
  9. Helen
  10. Lynn
  11. Jocelyn
  12. Marilyn
  13. Gwendolyn
  14. Jacklyn
  15. Madeline

1952:
  1. Carolyn
  2. Marilyn

  10. Jacquelyn

  5. Carolyn
  6. Marilyn
  7. Caroline
  8. Adeline
  9. Jacqueline
  10. Gwendolyn
  11. Madelyn
  12. Marilynn
  13. Evangeline
  14. Roslyn
  15. Hellen

1892**:
  1. Helen
  2. Ellen
  3. Caroline
  4. Evelyn
  5. Madeline
  6. Adeline
  7. Carolyn
  8. Evangeline
  9. Adaline
  10. Evalyn
  11. Gwendolyn
  12. Emeline
  13. Magdalen
  14. Ethelyn
  15. Adline

*Quite a few "-line" names have multiple pronunciations--"lin", "leen" or "line". With many, there's no way to separate them, but I did remove the ones that were rarely, if ever, 'lin'--Pauline, Angeline, Arline, Earline, etc.
**Before 1937, the SSA did not require all citizens to register for a SSN. Thus, data before this time is voluntary, and therefore not as reliable.

Usual Nickname, Unexpected Name--Ari

A Top 500 boy name on the rise, Ari has begun to gain momentum as a girls' nickname--nothing new in the naming world, of course--thanks to the doubly-Top 100 Ariana/Arianna, and wow-it's-rising-fast!-Aria. Ari on its own also had a respectable rise on the girls' charts, now sitting a bit below the Top 1000 at 1326. Although it is a full name in its own right, wanting a full name for Ari is understandable: while it's masculine in most cultures, it's easily mistaken for a girl's name in English.

Boys:
  • Aram (AH-rahm, Armenian)--"excellence"
  • Aravind (AHR-ah-vind, Hindi)--"lotus"
  • Archibald (AHR-chih-bahld, English, Scottish)
  • Ardal (AHR-dahl, Irish)--"high valor". Anglicized from Ardghal.
  • Arduino (ahrd-WEE-noh, Italian)
  • Argus (AHR-goos, [ancient] Greek)--"shining"

"Unisex" Names--2012 SSA Analysis

As always, unisex names continue to fascinate me. Soooo......yeah, you know what's coming--a numerical analysis of unisex names. So, I compared the percentages of names that appeared on both lists, and came up with...well, a mess at first. I should have remembered from last year--the names at the very bottom really mess stuff up. :p
But, just for your amusement, the "most unisex" names from 2012 (that is--those that were given to roughly an equal percentage of boys & girls).
  1. Ryen
  2. Altair
  3. Gabriell
  4. Adama
  5. Teegan
  6. Makana
  7. Paiden
  8. Kmari
  9. Sayge
  10. Blayke
That includes all names, down to ones only given to 5 kids of the same gender. If you're confused, I looked at the percentages--for instance, Ryen was given to about 0.0016% of boys, and 0.0017% of girls last year. That's about 16 out of every million boys, and 17 out of every million girls.
So, like I said, analyzing the full list isn't that useful. Let's just include names appearing in the boys' Top 2500:
  1. Teegan
  2. Marion
  3. Jael
  4. Linden
  5. Jules
  6. Daylin
  7. Kameryn
  8. Taylen
  9. Ocean
  10. Jackie
  11. True
  12. Jaidyn
  13. Dakota
  14. Remy
  15. Ryley
  16. Finnley
  17. Kendell
  18. Gracen
  19. Aven
  20. Jaziah
Now there're some recognizable names! I'm definitely not terribly surprised to see mostly invented names and modern spellings on here. They've not had time to get "set" in one gender or the other. Linden, Ocean,  & True aren't too much of a surprise, since nature/word names are often unisex. Marion & Remy were quite unexpected, though.
And just to narrow things further, the most unisex names from only the boys' Top 1000:
  1. Jael
  2. Jaidyn
  3. Dakota
  4. Remy
  5. Justice
  6. Oakley
  7. Jaylin
  8. Dominique
  9. Jessie
  10. Austyn
  11. Frankie
  12. Landry
  13. Sidney
  14. Emory
  15. Emerson
  16. Charlie
  17. Skyler
  18. Kamdyn
  19. Riley
  20. Phoenix
Jessie, Sidney, & Dominique are in the Top 1000 for boys? Color me shocked! I mean, I know they're all historically male/unisex, but wow...that's kind of awesome.

And here're all the "unisex" names in both Top 1000s, from most masculine to most feminine (ratios rounded to nearest 1/2, and keep in mind that girls are much more likely to have alternate spellings):

  • Harper (18x more popular for girls)

And with all the boys' names being spotted on girls nowadays, I bet you're wondering if there're any boys' names that didn't appear on the girls' list. Of course! Over 11,000 actually. Most of the boys' list doesn't appear on the girls', which is rather reassuring. In fact, 488 out of the boys' Top 1000 doesn't appear at all on the full girls' list. I'm not listing them all.
But, I will give you the 20 most common, and 20 least common. :)

Saint Who? Part II--Surnames, Titles

While doing my post on unexpected saints' names a while back, I noticed some fun name possibilities with their surnames/titles. There are many Marian names that came about this way, but it's much rarer with other saints. However, at least one has made it into everyday American usage: Xavier, from Saint Francis Xavier.

  • Agira (ah-JEE-rah)--from St. Philip of Agira, patron saint of U.S. Army Special Forces.
  • Amasea (ah-MAH-see-ah)--home of a few saints, notably Theodore of Amasea, patron of soldiers and for the recovery of lost items.

The Biggest Losers (2012)

Which names are rising is undoubtedly more fun, but which names are on the decrease can be quite telling, too. And of course, parents of kids with these names are probably happy to see them becoming less popular. ;)

Biggest drops in rank (Top 500 only--let's face it, the higher they are, the more interesting the fall):

Boys:
  1. Brayan  (#427 --> 499)
  2. Jalen (#399 --> 470)
  3. Trey  (#324 --> 393)
  4. Amare (#426 --> 495)
  5. Casey (#423 --> 486)
  6. Payton (#397 --> 458)
  7. Jakob (#335 --> 395)
  8. Randy (#355 --> 413)
  9. Jerry (#393 --> 447)
  10. Jaylen (#206 --> 257)
  11. Braylon (#233 --> 279)
  12. Emanuel (#261 --> 306)
  13. Devon  (#352 --> 397)
  14. Reece (#440 --> 485)
  15. Braden (#259 --> 303)
  16. Raul (#359 ---> 402)
  17. Mitchell (#420 --> 463)
  18. Jimmy (#418 --> 460)
  19. Jaden (#100 --> 140)
  20. Corey (#312 --> 351)

Girls:
  1. Dulce (#415 --> 574)
  2. Mikaela (#452 --> 592)
  3. Estrella (#433 --> 562)
  4. Danna (#365 --> 490)
  5. Audrina (#319 --> 440)
  6. Cameron (#443 --> 553)
  7. Kiera (#483 --> 590)
  8. Savanna (#346 --> 447)
  9. Tenley (#424 --> 520)
  10. Paola (#479 --> 575)
  11. Breanna (#308 --> 403)
  12. Kendra (#293 --> 387)
  13. Jasmin (#421 --> 515)
  14. Kailyn (#399 --> 492)
  15. Joselyn (#370 --> 461)
  16. Kiley (#423 --> 513)
  17. Jayden (#292 --> 380)
  18. Liana (#463 --> 546)
  19. Sasha (#373 --> 451)
  20. Karen (#287 --> 353)
Whoa, Jay-names (and to a lesser extent other -ay-names) down for both genders!  Interesting.

Biggest percentage decreases of 2012:

Boys:
  1. Jacob (1% --> 0.94%)
  2. Justin (0.35% --> 0.29%)
  3. Tyler (0.44% --> 0.38%)
  4. Christopher (0.64% --> 0.59%)

Girls:
  1. Chloe (0.57% --> 5%)
  2. Alexis (0.34% --> 0.28%)
  3. Addison (0.48% --> 0.42%)
  4. Madison (0.64% --> 0.59%)
  5. Alyssa (0.31% --> 0.26%)
  6. Isabella (1.02%--> 0.99%)
  7. Natalie (0.45% --> 0.41%)
  8. Nevaeh (0.31% --> 0.28%)
  9. Ashley (0.28% --> 0.24%)
  10. Makayla (0.23% --> 0.19%)
Hmm, both Hayden & Jaden are on this list (and Jayden  is at #12). Could the -aidens really be on the way out? And classic boys' names (as in, perpetually common) continue to lose ground...

Biggest drops in relative frequency (how much more common they were in 2011):

Boys:
  1. Jorden (1.53x)
  2. Tremaine (1.44x)
  3. Treyton (1.43x)
  4. Jerimiah (1.42x)
  5. Giovani (1.39x)
  6. Lathan (1.39x)
  7. Kenyon (1.38x)
  8. Kyron (1.38x)
  9. Bailey (1.37x)
  10. Braedon (1.37x)
  11. Yandel (1.36x)
  12. Zachery (1.36x)
  13. Jovany (1.36x)
  14. Branden (1.35x)
  15. Jordyn (1.35x)
  16. Jaden (1.35x)
  17. JohnPaul (1.33x)
  18. Jakobe (1.33x)
  19. Desean (1.33x)
  20. Trevon (1.33x)

Girls:
  1. Jaden (1.58x)
  2. Dulce (1.49x)
  3. Payten (1.47x)
  4. Yamilet (1.45x)
  5. Shaniya (1.43x)
  6. Caleigh (1.41x)
  7. Danna (1.4x)
  8. Audrina (1.39x)
  9. Tegan (1.38x)
  10. Estrella (1.38x)
  11. Jazmyn (1.37x)
  12. Kiersten (1.37x)
  13. Shania (1.37x)
  14. Tianna (1.36x)
  15. Naima (1.36x)
  16. Ashton (1.36x)
  17. Mikaela (1.35x)
  18. Karley (1.34x)
  19. Janiah (1.33x)
  20. Jaiden (1.33x)
Wow. Overall, Jayden & spelling variants are easily the name decreasing the most, for both genders. Two different spellings for Michaela, Payton, Jordan, Jacob, Giovanni, and Jasmine, too. Hmmm....

What Does 'Change' Mean? (2012) Part III

Change in rankings is one way to gauge change in popularity, and it definitely has its advantages--easy to quantify & easy to understand. However, I find a change in percentage analysis a bit more interesting. It shows just how much more popular a name has gotten.

The biggest gains in usage in 2012 were:

Boys:
  1. Liam (0.66% --> 0.83%)
  2. Gael (0.034% --> 0.13%)
  3. Brantley (0.079% --> 0.13%)
  4. Jaxon (0.23% --> 0.31%)
  5. Ethan (0.82% --> 0.87%)
  6. Jace (0.18% --> 0.23%)
  7. Eli (0.355% --> 0.40%)
  8. Damian (0.043% --> 0.19%)
  9. Henry (0.36% --> 0.40%)
  10. Hudson (0.17% --> 0.21%)

Girls:
  1. Harper (0.35% --> 0.37%)
  2. Emma (0.97% --> 1.08%)
  3. Paisley (0.08% --> 0.15%)
  4. Aria (0.1% --> 0.17%)
  5. Skylar (0.11% --> 0.17%)
  6. Aubree (0.15% --> 0.21%)
  7. Zoey (0.33% --> 0.39%)
  8. Charlotte (0.33% --> 0.39%)
  9. Avery (0.38% --> 0.43%)
  10. Amelia (0.33% --> 0.37%)
The reason I prefer percentage-change analysis to rankings is that rankings sometimes aren't all that helpful. So Ethan went from #8 to #4 (which is pretty impressive a jump in the top 10, actually)--does that really mean it's that much more common this year than last? Well, no, not really. In 2011 about 8 in 1000 boys were named Ethan, and in 2012 that increased to about 9 in 1000. The top names are actually all very close to each other in usage.
Which brings me to another fun exercise--relative frequency. While your chances of meeting a baby Ethan haven't really changed all that much, you may have noticed in the lists above that Gael's percentage nearly quadrupled. That's right, you're almost 4x more likely to meet a baby Gael than you were last year.
The biggest risers in relative frequency (only includes names in the Top 1500 for 2012):

Boys:
  1. Damoni (5.5x)
  2. Jayceon (4.3x)
  3. Gael (4x)
  4. Jionni (3.9x)
  5. Trayvon (3.24x)
  6. Brantlee (2.9x)
  7. Major (2.83x)
  8. Zayn (2.73x)
  9. Brantley (2.6x)
  10. Jase (2.5x)
  11. Brently (2.33x)
  12. Gionni (2.32x)
  13. Damani (2.3x)
  14. Messiah (2.1x)
  15. Iker (2x)
  16. King (1.97x)
  17. Foster (1.96x)
  18. Dakari (1.8x)
  19. Neymar (1.78x)
  20. Kyrie (1.77x)

Girls:
  1. Cataleya (22.8x) [no, that is NOT a typo!]
  2. Kataleya (19.3x)
  3. Adley (5.8x)
  4. Litzy (3.34x)
  5. Sutton (3.3x)
  6. Kenia (2.78x)
  7. Batsheva (2.4x)
  8. Blakely (2x)
  9. Arya (1.96x)
  10. Malaysia (1.95x)
  11. Monroe (1.9x)
  12. Itzayana (1.84x)
  13. Zooey (1.8x)
  14. Colette (1.8x)
  15. Paisley (1.79x)
  16. Rosie (1.7x)
  17. Kenya (1.7x)
  18. Ivory (1.65x)
  19. Alyanna (1.65x)
  20. Braylee (1.64x)

Gotta say, I have no idea where Damani & Damoni came from. Jionni/Gionni is a bit of a surprise, but a logical successor to Giovanni & its many forms. Brantley & Brentley continue their rise from last year. Could they be Top 100 material in a couple years?
I don't think anyone saw Cataleya coming. Adley, Sutton, Blakely, & Monroe are no surprise, following easily in the modern surnames-for-girls trend. Rosie & Colette are nice surprises.

Assessing Predictions

Alright, so back in September I took a chance & made some predictions, based on a change in number of alternate spellings. Time to see how that worked out.....if I have to.....

Names I pegged to keep rising:
  • Aiden--this spelling dropped one spot, and a smaller percentage of boys were given the name Aiden/Aidan/Ayden. Fail.
  • Kason--from #417 --> 385. Right!
  • Josiah--from #80 --> #79. Right!
  • Zayden--from #292 --> 229. Right!
  • Grayson--from #97 --> 85. Right!
  • Amaya--from #211 --> 215. Fail. Maya has been slowly decreasing for a few years now, so I shouldn't be too surprised.
  • Adalyn--from #214 --> 197. Right!
  • Olivia--still #4, and the percentage was approximately the same, too! I'll have to wait until NameNerds' combined-spelling list comes out.
  • Callie--from #221 --> 212. Cali jumped from #389 --> 329, though, so.....almost?
  • Kendall--from #124 --> 116. Right!
  • Zoey--from #28 --> 20. Right!
  • Katherine--from #61 --> 64. The top 4 forms of Katherine all fell, in fact. Major fail!

Names I pegged to fall / keep falling:
  • Jayden--from #4 --> 7. Right! Well, tentatively. It's possible enough unusual spellings have  risen to make a gain overall.
  • Zachary--from #64 --> 68. Right!
  • Brayden--from #37 --> 39. Right!
  • Nicholas--from #42--> 49. Right!
  • Caleb--still #32, but the percentage dropped slightly. I guess the verdict is still out.
  • Elijah--still #13, but the percentage rose slightly. Tentative fail.
  • Damian--from #137 --> 97. Major fail! Is there some cultural reference I've missed?
  • Arianna--from #52 --> 49. Fail.
  • Kaylee--from #36 --> 34. Tentative fail. Kaylee has more alternates than almost any other name on this list, so I'll have to check again when NameNerds' list come out.
  • Makayla--from #56 --> 69. Right!
  • Jocelyn--from #70 --> 92. Right!
  • Kaelyn--from #386 --> 417. Right!
  • Madelyn--from #79 --> 67. Fail.
  • Brianna--from #45 --> 51. Right!
  • Riley--still #47, but the percentage dropped slightly. However, this is yet another name with many alternates.
  • Hailey--still #32, but the percentage dropped slightly.
  • Kylie--from #58 --> 59. Tentatively right, but I'll have to look at the other spellings.
  • Addison--from #13 --> 14. Right!
  • Kaydence--from #263 -- >271
  • Juliana--still #147, but the percentage went up slightly!. Fail.
  • Lillian--from #22 --> 25. Right!
  • Isabella--from #2 --> 3. Right!
  • Madison--from #8 --> 9. Right!
  • Kayden--from #105 --> 99. Fail, tentatively. Kayden has the most alternates of any boys spelling.
  • Giovanni--from #117 --> 119. Right, tentatively. Giovanni has the second-most alternates of any boy name.
  • Jaylen--from #206 --> 257. Right!
  • Malachi--from #164 --> 168. Right!
  • Abigail--still #7, but the percentage went down. Top variant Abbigail also dropped in rank. Right!
  • Aniya--from #414 --> 454. Right!
  • Kaitlyn--from #100 --> 118. Right!
  • Natalie--from #14 --> 17. Right!
  • Emily--still #6, but the percentage has dropped. Right!
  • Peyton--still #53, but the percentage has dropped. Right!
  • Allison--from #40 --> 38. Fail.
  • Destiny--from #91 --> 113. Right!

Overall, I'm pretty proud of myself. However, my guesses were based on momentum & only two data points, so maybe next year I can make a few more risky predictions. ;)

What Does 'Change' Mean? (2012) Part II

And it's time for the boys. First up, the names gathering momentum in the depths of the baby-name world--the highest jumpers from #2500 & up:

  1. Trayvon, +1265 (#2326 --> 1061)
  2. Jionni, +1256 (#2126 --> 870)
  3. Brantlee, +1040 (#2069 --> 1029)
  4. Damani, +834 (#1991 --> 1157)
  5. Gionni, +759 (#1798 --> 1039)
  6. Jordi, +746 (#2402 --> 1656)
  7. Brantly, +724 (#2389 --> 1665)
  8. Cartier, +686 (#2423 --> 1737)
  9. Rishaan, +613 (#2413 --> 1800)
  10. Aayan, +610 (2235 --> 1625)
  11. Laken, +592 (#2348 --> 1756)
  12. Gentry, +587 (#2274 --> 1687)
  13. Ryu, +578 (#1901 --> 1323)
  14. Dakari, +575 (#1827 --> 1252)
  15. Arley, +565 (#2267 --> 1702)
  16. Saad, +564 (#2380 --> 1816)
  17. Foster, +554 (#1549 --> 995)
  18. Drayton, +542 (#2395 --> 1854)
  19. Kabir, +537 (#2209 --> 1672)
  20. Saif, +535 (#2321 --> 1786)

Now, since parents tend to be more conservative when naming boys, it's no surprise that this list is a lot less recognizable than the girls'. Perhaps the top jumpers from #1500 & up will be a bit more revealing:
  1. Major, +505 (#988 --> 483)
  2. Brentley, +417 (1167 --> 750)
  3. Kase, +413 (#1385 --> 972)
  4. Jael, +411 (#1400--> 989)
  5. Jordy, +411 (#1482 --> 1071)
  6. Axton, +400 (1317 --> 917)
  7. Kyrie, +384 (#1250 --> 866)
  8. Gannon, +366 (#1436 --> 1070)
  9. Deklan, +358 (#1470 --> 1112)
  10. Vivaan, +347 (#1445 --> 1098)
  11. Ares, +340 (#1388 --> 1048)
  12. Neymar, +313 (#1012 --> 699)
  13. Grey, +309 (#1346 --> 1037)
  14. Kaysen, +308 (#1265 --> 957)
  15. Vihaan, +286 (#932 --> 646)
  16. Adler, +282 (#1458 --> 1176)
  17. Jeremias, +279 (#1335 --> 1056)
  18. Zev, +277 (#1485 --> 1208)
  19. Arian, +273 (#922 --> 649)
  20. Graeme, +268 (#1255 --> 987)
Many of these were on last year's list as well--Brentley, Arian, Vihaan, Deklan. Interestingly, Aston & Jaxton were on last years', and Axton is on this years'.

And of course, the names new to the SSA Top 1000 (completely new--not including names that have dropped out & re-entered the Top 1000):
  • Apollo
  • Axton
  • Brentley
  • Briggs
  • Dariel
  • Graeme
  • Jael
  • Jionni
  • Karsen
  • Kase
  • Kaysen
  • Kylen

What Does 'Change' Mean? (2012), Part 1

Ah, it's that magical time of year again--where I get even more sleep-deprived than usual, and my husband cannot get a turn on the computer. Yup, the SSA has released the 2012 baby name data.

This year, I'm saving myself the trouble and skipping right to the names ranked #2500 & above. Girls first!(because, let's face it, they're more trend-driven)

And so, the biggest jumps in rank from 2500 & up:
  1. Sutton, +1428 (#2472 --> 1044)
  2. Batsheva, +1083 (#2357 --> 1274)
  3. Haddie, +935 (#2471 --> 1536)
  4. Litzy, +922 (#1516 --> 594)
  5. Kenia, +755 (#1417 --> 642)
  6. Zelda, +726 (#2312 --> 1586)
  7. Milah, +724 (#2333 --> 1609)
  8. Alyanna, +608 (#2087 --> 1479)
  9. Itzayana, +607 (#1787 --> 1180)
  10. Zooey, +603 (#1855 --> 1252)
  11. Etta, +597 (#2256 --> 1659)
  12. Aspyn, +593 (#2321 --> 1728)
  13. Naomy, +592 (#2435 --> 1843)
  14. Monroe, +591 (#1540 --> 949)
  15. Brayleigh, +590 (#2157 --> 1567)
  16. Klaire, +546 (#2459 --> 1913)
  17. Karter, +543 (#2165 --> 1622)
  18. Lakyn, +542 (#2437 --> 1895)
  19. Rosie, +519 (#1638 --> 1119)
  20. Layan, +506 (#2388 --> 1882)
Some of these names are recognizable, others...not so much. So, the names more likely to be on everyone's lists--#1500 & up:
  1. Kenia, +755 (#1417 --> 642)
  2. Katalina, +447 (#1447 --> 1000)
  3. Faye, +413 (#1485 --> 1072)
  4. Malaysia, +400 (#969 --> 569)
  5. Blakely, +392 (#937 --> 545)
  6. Colette, +379 (#1038 --> 659)

  18. Addilynn, +291 (#1452 --> 1161)
  19. Hattie, +285 (#994 --> 709)
  20. Drew, +284 (#1354 --> 1070)

Wow! Some really great names in there! And some...not so much. And for the second year in a row, Hattie is one of the fastest risers. Definitely one to keep an eye on.

However, the biggest jumps of all didn't even make it into my program, and I almost missed them. But really, who expects names to jump 4000ish places?!?
Any guesses?
The Games of Thrones honorific Khaleesi, +3582 (#5094 --> 1512), and
the floral and Hollywood inspired Cataleya, +4444 (#4923 --> 479). Holy freaking crap!!!

And just for fun--the names new to the SSA Top 1000. Some have already been mentioned, but most have been slowly creeping up for a while.

Now, to be fair, a few of these names may not be -aidens...at least not necessarily. I can easily seen Maden being a poor spelling of Madden, and Nayden & Raiden are names in Bulgarian & Japanese respectively, but pronounced "nye-den" & "rye-den". Adán is the Spanish form of Adam, and said "ah-DAHN". There may be others like that I've missed, too.
Unfortunately, there's no way to know, and I imagine both possible interpretations are in use.

Usual Nickname, Unexpected Name--Millie/Mila

I haven't done this one yet? Really?? *hangs head in shame*
Originally short for Millicent, Mildred, and other musty Germanic names, Millie is more likely today to be a nickname for the comeback favorites Amelia & Camilla.
And speaking of rising favorites, Mila has quite a bit of potential overlap with Millie. Although it's pretty established as a given name overseas, it was originally a nickname for many Slavic -mil- names.

  • Amelina (ah-meh-LEE-nah, Germanic)--original form of Emmeline
  • Bohumila (baw-hoo-MEE-lah, Czech)--from Slavic, "dear to God"
  • Camellia (kah-MEE-lee-ah, kah-MEL-ee-ah, English)
  • Jamila (jah-MEE-lah, Arabic)--"beautiful". Spanish form is Yamila.
  • Magnhild (MANG-nhild, Scandinavian)--from Old Norse, "mighty in battle"
  • Marsaili (MAR-sah-lee, Scottish)--form of Marcella
  • Matilda (mah-TIL-dah, English)
  • Maximiliane (maks-ee-mil-YAH-neh, German)--other forms include Maximilienne (French) & Maximiliana (Latin)
  • Mélisande (may-lee-SAHND, French)--form of Millicent
  • Melitta (meh-LIT-tah, German, Scandinavian)--form of Melissa
  • Micheline (mee-sheh-LEEN, French)--form of Michele/Michaela
  • Mielikki (MEE-eh-lik-kee, Finnish)
  • Mihaela (mee-HYE-lah, Croatian, Romanian)--another form of Michaela/Michele
  • Milada (mee-LAH-dah, Croatian)
  • Milagros (mee-LAH-grohs, Spanish)--"miracles"
  • Milda (MEEL-dah, Lithuanian)--Lithuanian goddess of love
  • Milena (mee-LEH-nah, Slavic)--another form is Milana.
  • Milica (MEE-lee-tsah, Slavic)--also spelled Militsa
  • Milou (mee-LOO, Swedish, French)--from French, form of Émilie/Emilia
  • Milva (MEEL-vah, Italian)
  • Romilda (roh-MEEL-dah, Italian)--from Germanic, "famous battle'
  • Sharmila (shar-MEE-lah, Hindi)
  • Theomilla (theh-oh-MEE-lah, German)

Back to the Beginning

I know I say it a lot, but I'm amazed at how much names can change over time. While a few of our most popular names haven't changed much in the centuries (or decades...or less) since they were coined, many are quite old, and practically unrecognizable from their original forms.
This is mostly a "just for fun" post, but who knows?, maybe we'll find some usable alternatives to popular names. ;) See if you can guess them all!

Double Trouble

So, I was browsing the SSA database, wishing that the 2012 stats were out (three more weeks?!? GAH.), and came across the most common twin names. I know I've seen this before, but I never really looked too hard. I mean, statistically, the most common names for kids overall are still going to be pretty common for twinsies, too, right? Partially.
What I failed to consider is the common proclivity towards "matchy" names. What seems to happen quite frequently is for one twin to get a popular name, and the other to get an uncommon "match". Names that are quite uncommon overall are disproportionately more common for a twin.
Now, the data isn't perfect, of course--it only shows most common twinsets.  So, a name like Kaylee, which has dozens of spelling in use, doesn't rank highly at all. Also, a name could theoretically be in use frequently, but not paired with any one name particularly often. It wouldn't show up in these rankings either.
So, with those limitations in mind, here're some interesting stats:

The most common twin pairs are: Olivia & Sophia, Madison & Mason; Daniel & David.
However, if you break the pairs up:

G/G Names B/G Names B/B Names

Most of the names aren't too surprising. Logan, however, is ranked either #20 or #26 (depending on whether you prefer the SSA ranking or the NameNerds rankings). Why is it so much more popular for twins? Because of its matchy-ness with other names--particularly Landon, Lucas, Luke, & Liam. Hope is down in the 200s, but it's commonly paired with Faith. Jayda/Jada is fairly uncommon as well, but is frequently paired with Jayden/Jaden & Jordan.

David & Daniel are the most common twinset for boys...but they only appear paired with each other! There are a few of these sets--Heaven & Nevaeh, London & Paris, Reagan & Riley, Jayla & Kayla, Summer & Autumn, Valentina & Valeria; Blake & Brooklyn, Taylor (g) & Tyler; Chance & Chase, Hayden & Hunter, Christian & Christopher. Unsurprisingly, "matchy" names are more common for g/g sets.
(It's a bit depressing, actually.)

I also find it interesting that of all the unisex names, only Jordan shows up as only male. Jordyn is a fairly popular name, so I'm at loss as to why it doesn't appear in twin-sets often.
