Names of Ghibli (girls)

I'm a massive Studio Ghibli fan, so I have no idea how this post never occurred to me before now. ;)

Miyazaki especially is known for his strong, well-developed female characters, so I thought it'd be fun to go through all the Ghibli films (totally not an excuse for a movie binge night....or week, really) and collect every girls' name mentioned.
[in some cases, the characters are only named in the credits]

Television Babies

I always find it interesting what TV characters name their new babies. Do the writers actually take style and popularity (or time period, for historical fiction) into account? Or do they just pick something they think will make for good TV? Actually, I imagine it's a bit of both, depending on the attitude of the show. So, I decided to do a survey of babies born on the most popular and/or award-winning TV shows (according to IMDb & Wikipedia) in recent years.

The Other Fairy Tales

Before books and movies and urban legends, there were fairy tales. Many were, of course, adapted to the new mediums, but for some reason, others just never caught on in the modern world.
And so, just because, here are some fairy tale names you've probably never heard of. :)

Pixar Baby Names (more or less)

Names, Initially

It occurred to me the other day just how many great writers go by initials. I wonder why? Do they just have a more acute understanding on how words can affect biases? In the past, of course, many women were advised to publish under initials (or a male pseudonym) to attract readership, but I was surprised how few female writers I found that still might be recognized today.
Anyway, I'm sure I've missed some literary greats, so I look forward to your comments. ;)

Random Fact of the Day:

Because I'm tired of seeing this bit of misinformation on naming boards--Edward has NOT been jumping in popularity because of Twilight. In fact, the cultural phenomenon seems to have discouraged just as many parents as it inspired, because Edward's steady 75-year decline doesn't really seem to have been affected at all!
(Or, alternatively, you could interpret this as Twilight not even being important enough to influence naming trends. Either way works for me.)

Named Before Their Time

I know I can't be the only one who contemplates writers' choices of character names. Did they pick them for their history or meaning? Because of they felt right for the character? Or just because they sounded good?
I have to admit, when I read about real people with names that don't seem to fit their era, I feel admiration for their parents, who picked something that likely got lots of derisive comments and odd glances.
But, when I see fictional characters with names that don't fit their age or era (especially with shows that are supposed to be otherwise "realistic"), I just have to roll my eyes.
Double standard--probably.

  • Addison Montgomery, Private Practice (2007)
  • Elliot Reid, Scrubs (2001)
  • Finn Hudson, Glee (2009)
  • Harper Finkle, Wizards of Waverly Place (2007)
  • Jordan Sullivan, Scrubs (2001)
  • Murphy Brown, Murphy Brown (1988)
  • Piper Halliwell, Charmed (2000)
  • Remy "Thirteen" Hadley, House (2007)
  • Skyler White, Breaking Bad (2008)
  • Spencer Hastings, Pretty Little Liars (2010)

I also have to wonder--which popular names would have caught on without the characters? Hmmmm....
